GIRL BEHIND THE LENS: EMILY ABAY

Australian born and renowned fashion photographer Emily Abay is this months girl behind the lens. Originally from Melbourne, Emily now spends the majority of her time shooting all over the world. Emily boasts an enviable portfolio of images and has worked with an array of iconic publications including  Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Oyster, and is the go-to photographer/girlfriend of personalities like Jesinta Campbell, Elle Ferguson, Natasha Oakley and Devon Windsor.
 
We asked her to shoot our favourite Suboo muse and South Africa’s most famous face Jessica Lee Buchanan in the beautiful Cape Town.

Describe yourself in three words? 

Addicted...to...peanutbutter

 How long have you been practising your craft? 

Going on 15 years now! really showing my age...

 Biggest career highlight so far? 

Absolutely being sent to Paris! Getting paid to eat Nutella crepes was legendary.

 

Favourite photographer? 

Nicole Bentley... hands down... lighting queen

What has been your favourite country to shoot in? 

I loved shooting in India, the colours, smells, textures, heat.. everything about it just really tickled all the senses!

The most hilarious moment on the job? 

Way too many moments to count on one hand!! But maybe that time in between shots where we threw a Malteaser across an entire length of a pool and it landed perfectly into the videographers mouth! What a goal!

Biggest FAIL on the job? 

Forgetting to bring the chocolate for the 3pm sugar kick...

How do you wind down after a big shoot day? 

I love having couch time with a chai tea in ugg boots.. ahhh heaven

Who is your dream girl to shoot?

Probably Romee Strijd!

What advice would you give to aspiring fashion photographers? 

Don't expect everything to happen so quickly, you need to be patient, and you need to be humble about the process.
